She Would Say

 

I know that; she has experienced

Peaks and valleys, 


I know that; she has loved

Her life because of blessings

She would say,

 

I know that has made

Her to embrace and cherish,


I know that; she has surpassed

Vivid and insipid shades

She would say,

 

I know that has made

Her realise it will all perish, 


I know what she would say?

Afterall!  you are all mine

 

Because I was the one who

Felt you, heard you, bore you, 


I know that; she has faced

But remained contended

She would say,

 

Because I was meant to be

Dutiful, solicitous, and bountiful,

 

I know that; she has did it all

Without malice, otherwise

We would have not been born?

She would say,

 

I know that; she is transcendent,

She is Magnificent,

She is Endless,

She would not say.

 Ambedkar as a Wonder      In my childhood, I was fascinated by the attire of Ambedkar and his chashma. Then I had no thought that his attire is a   symbol of modernity. I use to wonder why we celebrate Ambedkar Jayanti every year on the 14 th April but today I understand his philosophy, stature, and magnanimity. His insults, humiliation and social stigma of lower caste made him constructive critic of Indian society. Due to exploitation,   he possessed a firm belief in democracy, where every individual will have political, social and economic justice.     My People ‘People’ in the title of the poem represents the Dalit community who have been oppressed by an oppressive social system in India. The poem highlights the miseries of the poet’s community. Hence, he describes the lives and his society through literature. This poem was published as Nanna Janagalu Mattu Itara Kavitegalu (My People and Other Poems) 2005. Siddalingaiah is the speaker of the poem. Dalits are the downtrodden community who have been socially marginalized, excluded, and exploited by the upper caste of the Indian social structure, and hence for ages, they have been deprived of basic education, health, and other social privileges. Siddalingaiah becomes important because he drew society’s attention to the plight of his people through his poetry which flamed a light and heat that was its own.
